Doctor Who a People’s Choice candidate; Matt Smith on US TV
Doctor Who is set to get a little extra North American attention.
Our friends at the Doctor Who News Page report that Doctor Who is once again a candidate for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show in the 2011 People’s Choice Awards, which marks only the second time Doctor Who has received consideration for a major, mainstream American award (the series was also a nominee back at the 2008 awards, but lost to one of the Stargate series).
The PCAs are a popularity-based awards, based on a web survey—you can vote for Doctor Who or any of the other candidates on the PCA website. Other candidates include Being Human, Caprica, V, and Fringe. If it garners enough votes, it will become a final nominee, and as such may be mentioned on the air during the awards broadcast (which is usually a swanky star-studded affair, though the 2008 presentation had to be downgraded to a single-host announcement program due to the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike).
Meanwhile, again reported by the Doctor Who News Page, Matt Smith is scheduled to be a guest on the CBS talk show Late Show with Craig Ferguson on Nov. 16. Ferguson has mentioned his fondness for Doctor Who numerous times on his show (sometimes to the puzzlement of his guests!) so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles having a Doctor in the house. This is one of the first times—possibly the first time a current Doctor has appeared on a major American late-night talk show (Tom Baker once appeared on The Tonight Show, but several years before becoming the Doctor).

Being a new contributor, I’m not sure if it’s considered “cricket” to use another news page as a source. I decided to take my chances though since both of these items were somewhat time-sensitive - the voting for the PCAs will only be open for a while (and I voted so you don’t have to be in the US), while I’d hate to have anyone miss Matt on Craig Ferguson.

Well it couldn’t help but top most of the other mentions!
