Doctor 8.1: it just gets weirder

A day or so ago we posted about Paul McGann’s ‘new’ Doctor Who costume and made what was thought by many to be the reasonable assumption that it was to improve the base of promotional photos that the Eighth Doctor suffers from. This made sense to many of us, and it certainly made more sense than Paul McGann’s return to the TV series (which we wouldn’t object to but, really, if McGann was coming back, BBC Wales would be designing the props and McGann wouldn’t be unveiling a costume at a convention…)

No, the actual truth is stranger.

Bill Geradts, who was involved in the Armageddon Expo convention where the costume debuted, posted this bit of clarification on our last entry...

“This costume is an unofficial one designed by Paul with input from weta and arranged by Bill Geradts”

He suggested we look at the event’s Twitter feed for more pictures.

It’s not a Big Finish thing at all then. It’s just Paul McGann apparently engaged in cosplay.

I’m going to lie down…

And I thought Rob Ford’s election was sad…

It’s probably just a reflection of Paul’s frustration at the original costume he had as Doctor 8. It’s most likely he had thought of the Doctor’s costume along the same lines as this one when he first came to the role. As for whether it should be official, I would rather say not as it could affect continuity, but then again the actor’s opinion is important

Could it have anything to do with a perfectly reasonable wish to appear at conventions without looking like a cross between Jim Morrison & Austin Powers?  BTW, Rod, Rob Ford’s election is still sadder.
