DVD Grumblings

TV Shows on DVD has the news on the Revenge of the Cybermen and Silver Nemesis DVD releases which is happening in North America in November. But there are a couple of curious omissions here:

  • The Ark In Space when it was released almost 10 years ago had (rather nice) CGI effects for the Ark. So why doesn’t the Ark here have a CG version. Some of us were rather looking forward to seeing it crash into Voga…
  • Luca already complained about the lack of inclusion of the (previously released on VHS) special edition—personally I think a shorter Silver Nemesis is a less painful Silver Nemesis—but what has me bugged is that New Jersey Public Television produced a great behind the scenes documentary in 1988 which was used on the VHS release. Why not include it here? I mean other than Eric Luskin being so damn annoying—he was the yang to the yin of New Jersey Public Television’s Doctor Who specials back in the day—it’s a great little behind the scenes piece, and I can’t imagine rights clearances would be super-complicated (aside from the use of “Doctorin’ The TARDIS” as a theme song)

I’m sure both omissions are down to money but it does seem rather odd.

While on the topic of DVD omissions, I noticed a rather historic Doctor Who moment omitted from a recently purchased William Hartnell adventure The Chase. It all comes down to greed in my opinion and nothing else. Party “A” wants so much money to allow party “B” to show a particular clip or song while Party “B” doesn’t want to shell out too much money for said clip or song. And now because of such greed younger or new fans of Doctor Who will never get to see Ian and Barbara jigging along to The Beatles’ TICKET TO RIDE. Oops do I now have to pay a fee for even mentioning that?

Also a shame there is no isolated score for Revenge of the Cybermen - it’s an excellent score and one of only a handful from the early Tom Baker era that you could do an isolated score for (Zygons & Seeds of Doom being the other two).

The Silver Nemesis thing was explained as being due to that old enemy of preservation - licence rights. Just like future generations will not know the Beatles once appeared in The Chase. Or that the first season of WKRP actually featured pop music. Apparently they weren’t able to clear the rights for the special edition (which must mean the original agreement must have included stupid wording that only allowed for VHS release.

As for the CG effects on Revenge, I’ve noticed they don’t really have consistency on this, some have them, some don’t. I do like the fact viewers are given the option of choosing one version over another, which Star Trek TOS fans didn’t initially have when they went and redid all their effects. But frankly it’s never been a huge deal. I just bought Underworld and I accept the show for what it is and take enjoyment from the stuff that really matters - the acting and the writing.

its a shame that we are not getting new cgi on “Revenge"to tie in with its sister story “Ark in Space” dvd release .. and also a shame that we cannot get a 2 disc set for Silver Nemesis, which was the 25th anniversary story after all, just as the “Five Doctors” had been the 20th celebration.  I think the recession is starting to show on the latest DVD releases, shorter docs, less features, although The Space Museum/ The Chase were fairly loaded up with good stuff I have to say (even if they did cut the Beatles scenes, another shame), but what was with that awful documentary on the Dalek War boxset ???
