season one
Three years ago, before the news that there would be a new Doctor Who, I thought it couldn’t be done. Even when I heard the news that Russel Davies was writing it, I was skeptical. I mean how can you remake Doctor Who? It was a great show 20 years ago, but TV has changed so much since then. How would it ever work? I didn’t really believe there was a new show until I finally saw those opening credits.
But never mind all that. The first season is not only the best season of Doctor Who, it is some of the best television ever. And watching it on DVD with surround sound is like seeing it again for the first time.

Is it out already? I checked on the 15th at Best Buy and Future Shop and they didn’t have it. A clerk at Future Shop said that either the date got pushed back or the shipment didn’t arrive. Which has happened to me before with a Star Wars video game. I went to HMV because I remembered that their site was powered by Amazon who had the DVDs shipping on the 14th. The clerk looked into it for me and said that it got pushed back to the 28th of March.
Has any one got their Region One, DVD from Canada already? If so, can you help this fan out? I saw the Toronto Star review it and would really love to get my hands on it.
Thought it was going to be a great Valentine’s gift to myself. Imagine the disappointment :(
Any ways, keep up the great work!

Gajo, I got my copy from amazon.ca. I have heard that it is hard to get in shops, but it has definitely been released.

Hey guys, I actually work for the Future Shop. And no we have not received it yet. Our computer says it is on backorder, but none have arrived at our warehouse as of yet! And this is company wide, so Best Buy is probably affected as well. I don’t think the date has been pushed back, I’m wondering if it’s the supplier actually. The March 28th date is what we have for the Beginning Box set…maybe that is what the HMV clerk mistook? It’s disappointing for me as well as my fellow London pals, as we were all looking forward to picking up Season One at a discounted price…oops! did I print that!?

I had completely forgotten about it DW Season 1 coming out this past wek.
I headed over to the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto this afternoon and they had the DVDs at the Music World, for 89.99. So I picked it up and though I would post here before I go watch a couple of episodes.

I’ve said it before and will say it again all you have to do is look back only 10 years ago to see how good a show a modern Doctor Who could be so I can’t say there is anything to be surprised at. If you haven’t seen the movie for a while check it out again and you will be shocked at how it is a precursor to the new series style. If only they would have realized what they had we could be on Series 10 instead of Series 1.
As for last season I liked it and it was good but at this point I can’t honestly fit it in my top 10 seasons at this point possibly the top 15 but that’s as far as I would go.
Actually I’d prefer to compare the new series seasons to each other first until for a while until it develops its own legacy. The fact is that last season was what it was because of the 26 seasons and the movie it was based on.
I’d let it create it’s own base that it will establish that hopefully will guide the series long past Davies time it all goes well.

You have too much faith in the telefilm, Ryan.
“The fact is that last season was what it was because of the 26 seasons and the movie it was based on.”
I disagree. A legacy of twenty-six seasons is what drew many viewers to watch “Rose”, but strong, engaging performances by the lead actors and fun, intriguing stories with minimal series continuity is what kept fans and new viewers tuning in during the course of the season.
The telefilm had its moments, but the story was the pits. I can only imagine the thousands of viewers who were turned off during the first ten minutes alone - Skaro? Time Lords? Daleks? the Master? regeneration? Toss in K-9 and Sarah Jane and you’ve got yourself an anniversary special.
Even if a post-telefilm series would have featured better writers, I’m sure Fox would have cancelled it after a season. Just look at how they handled Arrested Development.
“Actually I’d prefer to compare the new series seasons to each other first”
I agree with you there. Although it’s Doctor Who, I prefer to regard Series One and beyond as a separate entity.

Actually the HMV clerk is partially correct - part of Season 1 is coming out on March 28ths, the first three stories along with an abridged telesnap compilation of the fourth. But all this confusion via “Season 1”, “Series 1”, New Series, Series Two, “The Beginning” - let’s all admit it - calling last season “Season 27” is the only way to go for clarity’s sake!

I can’t believe the price of the box set…then again I CAN believe it! I was in a local Chapters book store and saw it there for $99.00!!! Now I know that Chapters will likely be the more expensive place to buy it but to think that it will probably be $70 or more somewhere else somewhat angers me. Most television collections run anywhere from the $40 - $60 range where as I have seen a single story from the Doctor Who Classic series for close to $40.00.
Did someone think it would be a funny joke to tell the BBC that Doctor Who fans are filthy rich? Sheesh! Although I hope to not pay the Chapters price I will buy it as soon as I see it for a cheaper price. (The cheaper the better)
Ah, I have just figured out why they are priced so high. Here I am complaining about the price and yet still planning to purchase it….We fall right into their hands don’t we? Infact when I saw the box set in Chapters I said to my girlfriend, “I can’t believe I will have to pay practically $100 for season one of Doctor Who”. Of which she replied, “No, you don’t have to.”
“Oh yes I do!”, I retorted.

I too am appalled by the high price of the Season 1 DVD set. As was said previously, other TV Seasons range anywhere from $35 - $60. ie Simpsons, Seinfeld, South Park, Red Dwarf…granted they are 3-4 discs but still $92+tx (at C1) to $99.99 (at amazon.ca) is horribly beyond ridiculous.
I just got mine today…I’m done $106.90 (from Cinema 1 in London) but meh, I’m a glutton when it comes to my Dr. Who Video/DVD collection :-D
