Awarding Notice
A few fan award things involving friends of DWIN and the blog that are worthy of note:
One of the Hugo Award nominations we didn’t mention was Mad Norwegian Press’ book Chicks Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the Women Who Love It, which is nominated in the Best Related Work category. This celebrated book about women and Who features writing from two Enlightenment columnists, Deborah Stanish and Robert Smith? (co-writing with Shoshana Magnet).
While I discussed in my last entry about the Hugos how Doctor Who the TV program’s nominations are blown out of all proportion, where the Hugos genuinely do have prestige are in its literary categories. The nomination of Chicks is very impressive—it’s the first book to tie-in to a TV series that’s been nominated in the Best Related Work category in literally decades, so kudos to Lynne, Tara and Mad Norwegian for this historic achievement.
Also of note are our old friends at the Constellation Awards, Canada’s SF fan awards, which will be held at the Polaris convention in July. Matt Smith, David Tennant and Tony Curran are competing in the Best Actor category, Karen Gillan and Katherine Jenkins are in the Best Actress category, while Doctor Who is in the best series category. Voting is happening now. There’s a nominal fee (to help this fan-run award pay for the actual awards and other things) but it’s well worth supporting. Go and vote for Doctor Who!
