Re-Vengeance Ideas
2Entertain have recently announced the upcoming schedule for Doctor Who DVD releases (not counting the episodes for the forthcoming season). This includes a number of re-releases of stories that were released early in the DVD range such as The Caves of Androzani, Tomb of the Cybermen, Spearhead from Space (amongst others) with re-mastered pictures and plenty of new extras that weren’t provided the first time round. In fact, the only early story released on DVD to not to get a re-released as a special edition is the highly-rated 6th Doctor story Vengeance on Varos.
There is a fan campaign of sorts to push for a re-release - to which I will add my voice, as this story is probably crying out for a special edition version than some of the others that have been selected (such as The Seeds of Death and The Three Doctors, which both had plenty of extras the first time round). In addition to improved picture quality and a “Making of” Documentary featuring the likes of writer Philip Martin and script editor Eric Saward (who were not involved in the original - and thus far only - Varos release), here are some more ideas for extras that could be added to a Vengeance on Varos Special Edition release:
Tomorrow’s Times - review of press comments from the the 6th Doctor era (they are apparently doing one of these for every Doctor, but without a Varos re-release, it’s difficult to see where they will fit the 6th Doctor one as all of his stories have been released already.)
Vengeance of Baker - a special version of Tomorrow’s Times where Colin Baker reads aloud the same Sun editorial from 1985 calling Michael Grade and Jonathan Powell “over-paid fat-heads” over and over again until he’s satisfied.
The Hydrochloric Acid Show - Mat Irvine hosts a special look at the use of Hydrochloric Acid in Society
Vengeance on Varos Part 1.7 - a claymation scene where the 6th Doctor actually does push and drowns the guards in an Acid Bath, so that all the people who have claimed that he did can finally see for themselves what such a scene would look like if it actually happened.
The Varos Men - Writer Philip Martin and Script Editor Eric Saward meet at a train station and then head over to Chris Bidmead’s house to discuss the story.*
* I would just like to point out that (despite what my satire might suggest) I genuinely loved that they did this on Meglos - in my view every DVD release should now feature the writers heading over to Bidmead’s house to talk about the story, whether Bidmead was involved in it or not.

that was hilarious! the part about the writers heading over to Christopher H. Bidmead’s house!! that Meglos extra was a scream!
But in all seriousness, I will send 2 entertain an email as well - Colin Baker’s era deserves a re-release too, and Vengeance is the one that makes complete sense - I think it was one of the first 6 dvd’s of DW ever released! Back in those days the dvds were a little “skint” on extras.
So come on 2Entertain - lets give Vengence a great clean up, some interesting and new extras (definitely a “Tomorrow’s Times” feature and documentary) and a new commentary too!

I think, you will find, that they will come up with a reason to re-release alot of stories whether they were originally released early on or not.

Maybe the memory is cheating, but back in 1985, during the height of “the hiatus” I clearly remember either Doctor Who Magazine or some body related to DW fandom organizing a contest. I can’t remember if it was as a fundraiser, or what. But the grand prize was a complete set of raw master videos from Vengeance on Varos - all the alternate takes, behind-the-scenes, etc. A bonus disc with all this stuff would be rather cool - I quite enjoyed the fly-on-the-wall aspect of the raw video included on City of Death and The Five Doctors.

^ I just did a Google search and found out the original DVD (which I’ve never actually encountered) does in fact have some of this raw footage, so never mind! (Though a complete set of raw recordings from a DW recording session would still be cool to see.)

As someone point out on GB it doesn’t even have to be a 2 disc release like the others. I’d also include The Ark in Space and The Visitation on a RV 4 set.
