Carnival of YouTube

Sunday 10 AM: hear from a friend that BBC Worldwide is now showing complete Doctor Who episodes on YouTube. I go to their page to discover that this is indeed the case and they’re showing The Edge of Destruction, The Krotons, Carnival of Monsters and The Caves of Androzani

Sunday 11 AM:
Giddy with this excitement (and the thrill of watching Carnival of Monsters episode one), I post to the blog that this is the case and even embed all four episodes of Carnival of Monsters.

Sunday 1 PM: Start getting comments from blog readers saying “I can’t see this.” “This isn’t globally available.” etc. etc. I go to check and lo and behold… I receive the remark “NOT AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA”. I have no idea why I am deemed worthy of watching an episode in the morning and find myself Geofenced in the afternoon. It seems to be one of those random injustices of global licensing above lesser species like me. I decide to delete the blog item cheering this development.

Sunday 10PM: The Doctor Who News Page reports on the YouTube episodes and says “This is not available in Britain”. To which I find myself muttering, “AND CANADA!”

Wednesday 10 AM: Read the restriction on British users is now lifted. I go back to the page to see if this includes Canada. Discover that while the main page is now in a little bit of disarray (claiming that Carnival of Monsters aired in Season 4 and Caves of Androzani in Season 7!) - I can see the episodes again, provided I sit through a Progressive insurance ad. Of course I have to hit refresh to get it to finally show the episode.

So let’s try this again… Here’s episode one of Carnival of Monsters, written by Robert Holmes, directed by the late, great Barry Letts and starring Jon Pertwee as the Doctor. They’ve sadly turned off embedding but you can see it on the YouTube site. Unless they change their minds again…

UPDATE It appears that they have changed their minds and geofenced it again. Rassafrassin BBC Worldwide…

Nope… But thanks for being so patient in trying to make sense of this out for us!
