New Logo…..and a new Insignia!

image

The logo’s on the left, the insignia (no doubt for the spine of books, DVD releases etc.) is on the right, in case anyone is wondering…

UPDATE: Here’s the video for it used on the BBC website (which can’t be seen thanks to the BBC’s geofencing)

Is it just me, or does the font remind you of Super Mario Bros?

One word:  Fugly.

I was kind of taken aback when I first looked at it. It will probably grow on me. (Don’t have much choice). Very much the same shape as the Hartnell one. Perhaps it will look better when seen in conjunction with the opening credits.

There are 3 things that are certain in this world. Death, taxes, and the fact that any new Doctor Who logo will be hated (or called “fugly”) by somebody. I like it. However do we know for certain that the DW with the Tardis isn’t part of the main logo? That’s the impression I’m getting from other reports. Unfortunately most of the announcement appears to have been handled via videos that aren’t viewable in Canada (thanks BBC) so I honestly can’t go anywhere to find out for myself.

Wow…

I liked the previous one (except for the excessive lens glare) but this… gah… It looks like they tried to compensate for the fact there was no DW series in the 90’s by creating a logo strait out of there.

And the “DW” Tardis is just awful.

Funniest and truest thing said today.

Someone on Gallifrey Base did it at 16:9 with Doctor Who side by side at the same size and divided by the TARDIS graphic and it looked spectacular. In this form I’m a little less enthused, but it’s growing on me.

The basic design, I like.  The insignia is actually kinda cool, but honestly…

Every logo since 1987 has been a chunk of badly-rendered metallic CG with lots of lens flare, whooshing through space.  Can we move beyond that now?  Please?

The obsession with lens flare is a bit odd but other than that I’d say it’ll be a much better brand logo than the previous one. It’ll actually show up on the merch so you can read it and not just recognize it by the “lozenge” shape.

Generally, I’m just nervous about the new new Doctor Who, but I think it was the same with Tennant, and he’s my favourite, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt with everything.
That said, although my first reaction was ‘eugh’, the new logo’s already grown on me in the past 3 minutes. It’s actually pretty ingenious. And it’s blue smile

Ugh, it’s retro, and not in a good way.  It’s grown on me slightly in five minutes of making myself look at it, but it’s still “ick”.  I dunno why everyone hates lens flares so much (I never really noticed them)  I will give it this - it’s blue smile

Also, does this mean the title sequence is gonna be redesigned?  Or the theme music remixed?  God, let’s just hope that if they do the theme music they don’t decide to go nineties with THAT.  Some eras of music should be completely forgotten.

Then again, maybe I’m just being codgery and resistant to change.  I still don’t like the “Voyage of the Damned” theme remix (except for the more pronounced B major chord).

Well, after looking at it since yesterday morning (no, not continuously!), I do like it.  I don’t want to like it, but I do.

But now that’s out of the way, yeah I’m quite worried about what they’ll do with the theme too and opening titles too.

From my perspective, the logo is an improvement. Not that I disliked the previous one, but I do prefer the more traditional “Doctor” over the “Who” look. I too hope they don’t change the theme too much;  I hated the “electro-pop” versions that were used from the late seventies onwards and greatly appreciated that a more “muscular” version was introduced in 2005. Still, given all the clues we’ve seen recently, I think it very unlikely that we’re about to revisit the JNT years.
Is there any word yet on when the new series will be broadcast?

A new logo means a new title sequence…

I hope that this time the Doc’s face is going to be featured in the sequence.

...no. This doesn’t work for me.

The wordmark of the last four seasons has been perfectly good and workable. This is trying too hard for “teh Kewl”.

Isn’t this just a throwback to one the promotional logos from 1996:
