Baby We’ve Hit The Big Time, part 748: Holy Crap, We’re on the RT Christmas Cover!
Anyone who has ever lived in Britain can tell you that the most indispensible bit of reading at Christmas time is the Christmas edition of the Radio Times. During the holidays, RT publishes a bumper edition that covers the two weeks leading up to Christmas and New Years. Given how British television spend those two weeks showing a mammoth number of classic and current films and Christmas special episodes of favourite programs (of which The Christmas Invasion is the latest example), it’s no wonder that this is usually their bestselling issue.
Traditionally, the Christmas RT has a generic cover. It has only deviated from this twice in recent times: a Harry Potter cover a few years ago, and…this.
Behold, DOCTOR WHO IS ON THE CHRISTMAS COVER OF THE RADIO TIMES!!!
This is the third Doctor Who Radio Times cover this year, in case you were keeping score.
It’s official: 2005 is the best year, ever.

It’s about time the Radio Times after 42 years became complete and total sycophants for the series. Took them long enough! What I find strange though is that they seem to have the Tardis at original series - not new series proportions. Just look at those windows. How did that happen?

It probably happened because the Radio Times artists, quite rightfully, don’t care one iota about the size of the windows or exact dimensions of the Police Box.
But never mind that, what I think would really be cool for Buzzworthy to do for next Christmas is come out with an actual TARDIS Xmas snowscape ornament like the one depicted on the front cover - that would be awesome!

OK, is this really the best year ever? Does making the Radio Times cover really excite you that much? Calm down man, have a jelly baby! LOL.
I do have something serious to post here though, as one of the London area chapter members (The Bretheren), I am wondering how you post on here? Or is this something only you guys up there in Toronto can do? Because you see some exciting news has sprung up down here in London. A local comic book store owner wants to have a Doctor Who day this spring!! - when the show comes back on the air, and I was wondering how we can promote DWIN, and try to get some new members? I would be willing to do so…
So Graham, either let either me or Ray Currie know how we can do this…

Hi Peter
The blog has chosen its authors from Enlightenment’s contributors and it isn’t designed for anyone to just post to it. In any event, it’s not really the place for promoting events like this. Closer to the event, send myself or the admin@dwin address an e-mail giving the details and we’d be happy post it on the main DWIN website or put it in the events listing in Enlightenment.
Best, Graeme

“The blog has chosen its authors from Enlightenment’s contributors and it isn’t designed for anyone to just post to it. In any event, it’s not really the place for promoting events like this.”
Is there any particular reason why an upcoming Dr. Who Day at a comic book store in London couldn’t be promoted here? If it were one of your fellow “E contributors” would you encourage or discourage them from doing the same? And why can’t just anyone post here? It strikes me as rather odd that since this is a fan club site forum for Dr. Who that anyone whether a contributing editor or not, member of DWIN or not should be allowed to post here. Just stating what’s on my mind and NOT wanting to cause any trouble.

Hi Ray
The blog, as we jokingly say in our “What Are We” section, is about providing commentary and analysis of stuff happening in the world of Doctor Who. It’s not to promote local events. It’s true that we had a couple of entries about Toronto Trek last summer but afterward it was decided that in future it would be more appropriate elsewhere on the DWIN website, so to answer your question if it was a fellow Doctor Who Blog writer the answer would be no to them as well. (You will note for example we did not promote our Bad Wolf 1 event in Toronto at all on the blog)
Again, I would like to reiterate that it’s not like DWIN isn’t willing to promote your event Ray. As I said, send us the details a month or so before and we’ll put it on the main www.dwin.org website and will be promoted on our home page which has just as much visibility, if not more, than the blog. And we’ll put it in our events listings Enlightenment before the event, and if you have photos and a short write-up we’ll put it in Enlightenment after the event.
As to who writes for it, it’s a question of manageability. This is not meant to be a free-for-all forum—that’s why places like the Outpost Gallifrey forum exist—and if we let everyone post to it, how does decide (and who decides) if something’s appropriate or not? This is too many headaches for something with a fairly limited mandate and a limited number of volunteers. That’s (in part) why we’ve gone with a collaborative team approach. There are other vehicles for DWIN members to express themselves more fully like Enlightenment, and as I said above, we’d love to receive materials about your event.

...DWIN mailing list (Yahoo Group) also exists and it’s designed to be the open forum for all members to post, chat, discuss, advertise, and contribute. You can sign up on the DWIN home page: http://www.dwin.org/

Ok, then I’ll trust you to do that when the time comes.
Stay tuned!

And I can hope that I can also trust you to publish some of our members’ articles/letters etc. in “E”. I won’t name names but I happen to know a couple of articles are in the stages of being written and it would be nice to have them printed in “E”. We have been dismayed by the sometimes ignoring of our members’ articles that have been submitted over the last 2-3 years. I know that you have to make a choice as Editor for “E” regarding articles that are submitted but PLEASE realize it is supposed to be a Fanzine not a “Clique-fanzine”, meaning that ALL Chapters should be represented not just a select few.

Hi Ray. The blog is a place for commentary on the world of Doctor Who and not somewhere that we post event listings. There are other places we do that. Even the recent Bad Wolf event in Toronto was not listed on the blog so it is nothing against any particular group or event.

Hey guys, I didn’t mean to start anything here, but seeing how some comments have been made, I might as well respond. Thanks Graeme on the info given, and when the event gets closer - we will let you know. I just thought it was exciting news, and wanted to know what we should do to promote the event. And heck it wasn’t so much the event itself I wanted to know how to promote, it was DWIN itself. Just think new fans, possible new members! Now as for articles submitted, yes as someone who recently had an article ignored, it sorta sucks when that happens. I didn’t mind not being included in Enlightenment, I would have just liked some communication…on whether it was too long or whatever. You know to spend hours writing an article, only to hear nothing back. As for what goes in the fanzine, if you guys up the in the big smoke have a certain theme in mind for the next issue, try to let us know somehow. I know you are in touch with Sean Twist often Graeme, but he never makes it to our meetings, so we have no idea what you have in mind for the next issue. We feel sorta left out of the loop down here sometimes…Anyway, not mad here, just communicating…

I’m sorry Peter but I don’t seem to have an article from you. Could you contact me by e-mail and let me know when it was sent or re-send it?
We’re always happy to receive articles from anyone (preferably between 900-1600 words). And I would be happy to talk to either you and Ray about any further problems or grievances you might have by private e-mail.

Hey Graeme, sorry for bringing this up here. As I replied to an email from rudy or rudolf? ...I don’t have a comp at home. This is the only way I can send you any correspondence. The comps at work block out personal email sites, but not the blog for some reason. I will try to get to my folks and send you an email on maybe friday. There is much I would like to discuss ...LOL. Not meaning to start anything, just wanted us Londoners to be more active in DWIN, and wondering how we go about this. The submission I sent was on deadline day two issues back, so not for the current Enlightenment, was sometime in August this year. Was really long, figured that was why you didn’t print it…sorry if you never got it…

...“they” call me: Rod.
...as for being active? If email isn’t available… Canada Post works too!
Although… it is true that the world is internet biased. Which does make it harder for those without to make do. Unfortunately that is the way of things these days. Back in the “day” all fandom was conducted via the local postman…good days those. Just not as fast.
