Three Octopuses and an Otter
Did we fall through a crack in space and time? Did a late night American talk show, a network late night American talk show, really devote an entire hour to Doctor Who?
Why yes, yes it did. Matt Smith made his American talk show debut last night on the delightfully irreverent Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Despite an aborted opening dance number (as reported by audience members in attendance) featuring Ferguson singing over the Doctor Who Theme, the show was mad romp of site gags, harmonicas and good-natured teasing. Unfortunately, fans will have very little to pick over this a.m. other than Matt’s hipster sartorial style. He confirmed the Utah filming (Monument Valley, of course) and had a typically cryptic response to the standard “How long will you play The Doctor” question but dropped no new nuggets of information.
What he did do was raise Doctor Who‘s stateside profile. The studio audience was loaded with fans, including one gentlemen in a snappy tweed and bow-tie combo, but I would guess is a good portion of Ferguson’s viewing audience had passing or little knowledge of Doctor Who. Last night’s show may not have been heavy on Who-content other than a clip from The Vampires of Venice and bits of trivia, but it did give Smith a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. As far as Matt’s turn in the guest chair, his sense of humor and natural charm won out over his predecessor’s media experience. In similar guest appearances Christopher Eccleston was calm reason and intellect, David Tennant witty and and charismatic while, in comparison, Matt tripped over his responses a bit more but made up for any awkwardness by being engaging and fun. Then again, I’m not sure how the former Doctors would have held up to Ferguson, a man who has never met an entendre he couldn’t double or triple.
Well done, Matt. Thanks for bringing us a pre-Christmas shot of Doctor Who and, in an amusing twist, giving North American fans something to crow about while our U.K. brethren refreshed their browsers madly.
Speaking of refreshing browsers, how long before someone uploads the forbidden dance number?

I just noticed the YouTube version of the segment uses a much-shortened clip from Vampires - probably for rights reasons. As broadcast the clip originally started from around the part where the vampire girls tell the Doctor they’ll call for the steward, “if you’re lucky”.

Alex - I was a bit disappointed in the clip choice. Of all the brilliance available in S5 they went with hot vampire chicks. Oh, wait…

I have to say I thought my life went into a parallel universe when I saw Chris Hardwick make a joke about the plot of Evolution of the Daleks on CBS late night television. That was especially surreal.

Graeme - I was too busy thinking “Hmm…A Guy Ritchie voice *almost* makes that episode palatable.”
Almost.
But, yes. I know exactly what you mean.

I will say I think I’m going to start using “tootsie fruits” in place of swear words. If I had to pick a favorite moment, I think I’d go with the awkward pause, especially Matt’s timing at trying to steal Craig’s snake mug.
As for Vampires of Venice, that was actually a good choice, because it really shows how Matt approaches the character. They played that clip in at least one pre-debut talk show appearances Matt made in the UK. In fact it was the first clip I’d ever seen of him as the Doctor (not counting the regeneration) and I decided I was going to like Matt based on that clip alone. So I actually like that choice of clip. It was also somewhat of a standalone - it had the Doctor, some monsters that didn’t look like Daleks (an important consideration), and didn’t really need a set up the way, say, the food-sampling clip might. And it had no season spoiler for those who might buy the DVDs.
I’ve been looking around the blogs and an on-set report indicates the audience members all received copies of the DVD set, which was cool.

Thanks everyone for posting this video. I certainly wouldn’t have stayed up late to watch it on TV as I rise very early.
Matt Smith was quite charming, but appeared to be a little out of his ‘depth’. Ferguson is clearly a enthusiastic fan of Who, and was very gentle with his questions. Everyone appeared to be having fun and Doctor Who might well pick up some viewers/fans as a result of this gig.
Still it wasn’t really my cup of tea. (but no where near as bad of Jonathan Ross)

First time seeing this show. Funny. Good to see DW get some different exposure.
