Oh The Irony (Giant Robot Edition)
The Independent on Sunday has this report about the BBC training facility at Wood Norton, and how it houses the BBC’s own nuclear bunker. Built in 1966, this bunker presumably existed so that the BBC still could go about its business in the event of a nuclear holocaust.
What does this have to do with Doctor Who? Well, the BBC Training Facilities at Wood Norton was where they made all the exteriors for the 1974 Tom Baker debut adventure Robot.
(The above screenshot has Sarah and the Robot CSOed against a background shot at Wood Norton)
Robot, for those who might remember, is a story which is partially set in a nuclear bunker, and indeed several sequences shot at Wood Norton include those set at the entrance of a nuclear bunker.
It’s a shame its location was then a secret; they could have saved a lot of money actually filming the bunker scenes there rather than making sets at Television Centre…
Thanks to Peter Anghelides for mentioning this on Twitter!
