Today’s Burning DVD Question

The news that the DVD schedule in North America will synchronize with Britain leading to an actual worldwide release of product on the same day only leaves me with one question…

Will we be still seeing trailers for the Series Four Boxset on the DVDs?

I mean honestly… it was two years ago. There’s been a boxset with the specials since then. And Dreamland. And Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2 and 3. And Torchwood: Children of Earth…

There’s a part of me that’s going to be thrilled to be getting Meglos at the same time as the UK. But there better be a Series Five Boxset trailer on it. Because if I hear “You seem to be drifting sweetheart” one more time I won’t be responsible for my actions…

(With thanks to Gian-Luca Di Rocco for mentioning this!)

My wife and I play the game every time I slap in a new DVD - are we or are we not going to get yet another “You seem to be driftin’, swee’eart” (immediately followed by Steve Punt and the hillarious-once BBC America ad). Her theory is that the BBC and 2|Entertain (migawsh, I finally found a use for that character!) have an entire warehouse full of Series 4 boxsets; maybe somebody on the production line added an extra zero or two when the discs were being pressed.

Couldn’t agree more. But next will be Matt Smith talking to the TARDIS saying, “What have got for me this time” for the next year or so.

I just avoid the problem entirely by hitting the next button many times fast.

It is getting perverse though that this same trailer is getting more annoying that the constant Dalek revivals.

I agree totally. What was once one of the most effective trailers made for Doctor Who has completely worn out its welcome. Likewise, the Eric Idle “Thanks for buying this DVD” needs to be retired—especially since it looks absolutely stupid having it on the BLU-RAYs.

Since I haven’t heard our British cousins harping about this, I must assume these stock trailers are exclusive to the North American releases. At least we’re being allowed to see the excellent trailers for upcoming classic series releases - if you hunt around the menus for them. I’d rather they be put in front.

Hopefully the synchronization will mean we’ll start getting the same box sets as they do in the UK. I mean, The King’s Demons is fine and all, but I’d rather have it as part of a box set with Planet of Fire than having to buy it separately (ironically, here in Calgary it appears Best Buy/Future Shop only bothered ordering King’s Demons - I’m having to order Planet of Fire from Amazon, which is annoying).

I guess in a few years we won’t be as sick of this trailer as we are today. And since Classic episodes are not released in broadcast order, when we do a “Pilgrimage” like we blogged about recently we won’t have that trailer 30 times in a row.

And did everyone also know that we lost an entire documentary on the Planet of Fire DVD because someone really smart put some music on it, not realizing that outside of the UK they would run into clearance/ rights issues

It proved too difficult to remove the music (I can’t understand why?) and so they elected to simply remove the entire documentary from the international pressings of Planet of Fire.

Sucks to be Us.

Indeed, just watched Planet of Fire and found myself yelling at the trailer, “you’re not going to find him sweetheart, you’ll still be looking for him on the next bloody DVD release!” wink

At least we’re not getting tens of trailers for DVD boxsets that we’ve not heard of, or have no interest in acquiring. And it’s only one trailer. When I popped my first DVD in, I was pleasanty surprised at how few trailers for other shows there were. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Picked up a copy of The War Games last night. And yes, she was “drifting” again!

Yes, let’s hope that the Meglos DVD doesn’t contain anything that repeats incessantly.

“Oh no, not again!”
“What’s the matter?”
“Well, now his probe circuit’s jammed.”
“Oh that’s easy, just waggle his tail…”

I see someone beat me to mentioning the loss of the documentary on Planet of Fire. I don’t understand why people insist on using music that might run into trouble. How about - DON’T USE MUSIC. Or, at least, use music from the show, which has been cleared already. We’ve been pretty lucky so far - other than a couple of minor things and that Barrowman commentary on Last of the Time Lords, we’ve generally been able to see what the UK has seen on DVD (soon including the TV movie). But it doesn’t make sense why they’d blow it now. Same argument goes with Doctor Who Confidential - the reason why we only see those cut-down versions is because they insist on using licensed music on the show. DWC is very much its own entity now, so even if they didn’t want to give us a 12-disc set each season, they could market and release DWC separately and make some money off it (rather than letting the bootleggers do it - and you know someone out there is probably peddling homemade DWC DVD sets, especially now it’s airing on PBS and more accessible).
