Things I Learned from Doctor Who #4572
“Scum” is a more dignified insult that “Ignorant, maggot-ridden peasant”.
How do we come to know this from watching Doctor Who? We can reasonably come to this conclusion from the critical notes given by the BBC Head of Drama in 1986, Jonathan Powell (he who helped tried to kill the show off in 1985) to the production team for the first seven episodes of The Trial of a Time Lord. In these notes he bashed the scripts written by Robert Holmes (widely seen as Doctor Who’s greatest ever writer), complaining that the characters of Glitz and Dibber were “impossible to take seriously” and that the whole story “collapsed” as a result. Unhelpfully for the production team, not only were these notes delivered back too late in the day to be useful, there is little to nothing in the way of an explanation as to why it was “impossible” for one to take Glitz and Dibber seriously, other than an unfavourable comparison to Yrcanos and Dorf from the Philip Martin script which followed (Mindwarp), whom he felt were similar characters but believable because they had “dignity”.
There is no explanation in the notes as to why a couple of intergalactic con men need to have “dignity” in order for their characters to be taken seriously, so we can only assume that it is because when Yrcanos insults people in the script he calls them “Scum” whereas Glitz uses “ignorant, maggot-ridden peasant”, and therefore “scum” must be a much more dignified insult than “ignorant, maggot-ridden peasant”.
You see - it’s as easy as the Greek letter pi!

Also, if memory serves, there’s a part where Glitz calls Dibber an “Ignorant Dink!” Gee, one wonders how that story even got considered.
