Hmmm, clearly Steven wants a more “classic series” feel for, well, everything. I guess I’ll wait and see, I’m definitely a new series/RTD fan, so I’m slightly nervous.
Sorry to split hairs, but I can’t see any difference in the wood texture, the difference looks to me like the paint job is more vivid and slightly more plastic-like. And the redesigned windows.
Also, maybe it’s just me, but the TARDIS always looks bigger in photos than it does in the show.

No they’re not. They’re noting that the production team is calling it “series one” but caveating that it’s “the 31st season of the program since it started in November, 1963”. Actually, it seems to me that they’re hedging until they actually have to do features on the making of series five, er one, er 31…
It’s true the Hartnell Police box had the white trim on the windows and the St. John’s Ambulance badge but the colour and the general condition of it seems much more reminiscent of the Peter Cushing movies

Could it be that the slightly new design and the brighter paint job may be due to the fact that the series is now being filmed in HD?

Whoa, series one? Weird.
Yes, I tend to lump “everything before 2005” into the category of “classic series”, simply because I haven’t really watched much of it, but I’ll take your word that it’s closer to the Cushing stuff.

I still think it looks like the plastic one on my shelf….

I wouldn’t get too worked up about how the TARDIS prop looks in these photos. The prop always looks a bit junky and fake in behind the scenes shots (some shots taken during filming back in 2005 made it look particularly bad). But once the lights hit it, the filter is on the camera, the HD tape is rolling, and the “filmization” occurs (wherein the video image is processed to look like film), the TARDIS could end up looking exactly the same as it has for the last 5 years or it could end up dayglo pink for all we can tell. As long as it remains a police box, that’s all I care about.
