DVD Commentary

Series 3 Box Set - UK VersionThe latest DWM has leaked out early to a number of subscribers (including Canadians!). There’s a great article on the DVD releases where they spill the beans about the extras on the upcoming Series 3 Box Set, including news about the commentaries therein.

  • Russell T Davies and David Tennant (Runaway Bride, Smith and Jones, Utopia)
  • David Tennant and Christina Cole (The Shakespeare Code)
  • Julie Gardner, Travis Oliver and Marie Jones (FX producer) (Gridlock)
  • Helen Raynor, Miranda Raison and Louise Page (Daleks In Manhattan)
  • David Tennant, Nicholas Briggs, Barney Curno (FX) (Evolution of the Daleks)
  • Will Cohen and Leo Jones (Lazarus Experiment)
  • Russell T Davies and Chris Chibnall (42)
  • Charles Palmer, Paul Cornell and Murray Gold (Human Nature)
  • Susie Ligatt, art director Arwel Jones and production manager Tracie Simpson (Family of Blood)
  • Steven Moffat and Murray Gold (Blink)
  • Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson (The Sound of Drums)
  • David Tennant, Freema Agyeman and John Barrowman (Last of the Time Lords)

All this plus Doctor Who Confidential cut down, outtakes, deleted scenes, David Tennant’s video diary, Freema Agyeman’s tour of the studio, BBC 1 trailers and an Easter Egg (tellingly, on the same disc as Blink!)

I have to say I’m annoyed that there isn’t more of Freema on the commentaries; but the Family of Blood commentary is downright disappointing (are Thomas Sangster or Jessica Hynes not available?). I wish they’d let people do commentaries across the two parters like they did on The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances in series one.

And why can’t they include the BBC website podcast commentaries as well? They’re superb and it would hardly overtax the capacity of the discs to carry them. But then I’ve been hoping for years that the 2Entertain/BBC Video people would partner with the BBC website people for ages in terms of including the website’s video content on DVDs as well, in vain it seems.

Even so, it’s great to have so much more of Russell Davies (after being only present on a couple of commentaries last year) and great to have Steven Moffat’s commentary on the box set after being banished to the BBC website in Series Two. And judging from the personnel, it’s safe to say the commentary for Last of the Time Lords won’t be dull…

How does Cornell not do all of Human Nature?

Did he do TFoB online?

I know it’s not exactly fair to compare the superlative retrospective DVD’s of the original series to the new one because they’re well… new but that package of extras is very dependent on the Confidentials which is great over here for those that can’t get them but for the U.K. it’s just a cut version of what they’ve already seen.

Cornell did The Family of Blood online.

I’m annoyed that there’s not more effort to put more non-Confidential extras too. I mean, there’s a whole ton of things from programs like Blue Peter and other BBC appearances that would be superb to have on the DVD release as well. As I said above, the BBC website stuff often has interesting interviews and behind the scenes stuff that could even more interesting when not seen in a tiny realplayer window. Even Attack of the Graske would be welcome.

But…the David Tennant video diary was excellent last year and gave tons of behind-the-scenes insight and it’s back again (and better packaged this time putting them across different discs). And I’m pleased about the Freema Agyeman tour.

The other thing I’m disappointed about the cut-down confidentials being on there is the David Tennant-directed episode (that accompanied Blink) was so good and so unusual to the traditional confidential format it deserved to be kept full-length
