Jon Pertwee Stories to Air on BBC Kids

A news release from BBC Kids states: “Beginning April 16, for the first time on BBC Kids, viewers can catch the Jon Pertwee series (1970-1974) on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 a.m. ET on BBC Kids. The first story of this series, “Spearhead from Space” introduces viewers to the terrifying Autons for the first time.

“In news that will hearten fans, BBC Kids has acquired the colourized versions “Doctor Who and the Silurians”, “Terror of the Autons” and “The Daemons”.

The run will not be complete. Several stories, according to BBC Kids, “are unavailable and have not been acquired by BBC Kids”. These include:

  • The Ambassadors of Death
  • The Mind of Evil
  • Day of the Daleks
  • Frontier In Space
  • Planet of the Daleks
  • Invasion of the Dinosaurs
  • Death to the Daleks
As with the Davison stories, presumably the broadcast rights issues around the rebroadcast stories written by and/or featuring the creations of Terry Nation (namely the Daleks) has prevented them from showing Day, Frontier, Planet and Death. As for the remaining stories listed, it would seem that the BBC have not offered (or BBC Kids did not purchase) stories which only exist in Black and White as well.

This is exciting times for Canadian Doctor Who fans indeed! The new series airing on CBC and now Jon Pertwee on late night! We’ve entered a golden age…
