The Fifth of April, Two Thousand and Five
Sweet Mother, I thought this day would never come.
Doctor Who airs…heck it PREMIERE’s TODAY on our national broadcaster at 8pm!
North America has long been awaiting the return of Doctor Who…and it’s finally here. Canadians from coast to coast , and those lucky American’s in nearby boarder towns will finally get to see what 9.9 million confirmed (and joyful) U.K. viewers saw 2 Saturday evenings ago.
Also don’t forget to check out the CBC’s special six part documentary serial on the subject called: The Planet of the Doctor.
Information about that and Doctor Who on the Ceeb can be found at:
www.cbc.ca/doctorwho
Enjoy.

Just got done watching Episode One. I liked it. Ending seemed a little rushed. Treating it like chapter 1 of a 12 chapter book. Looking forward to next week’s story.

I just got done watching episode one. The show seemed OK, but I think it will be better once it gets “off planet”. I guess for me, well, I’m just too used to the old shows. It’s hard to get used to seeing people talking on cell phones and using the Internet on Doctor Who. Ah, but those olden days were simpler times. The one thing that REALLY bugged me was how CBC basically completely cut out the ending sequence with the theme music!! Hell, to me the theme and intro/ ending sequences were always just as important as the show itself! I couldn’t even tell if the credits bit to the right of the screen was the true ending sequence as seen on the BBC. If it was, then it was very poorly done and disappointing in the extreme to a long time Who fanatic.

It wasn’t. CBC replaced the original closing credit sequence with what we saw this evening. But hey, we got Chris Eccleston instead!

It’s what CBC does at the end of all of their shows. No reason to expect that things will be any different for Doctor Who.
I thought they did a perfect job placing the commercial breaks. They didn’t disrupt the action at all.

Though if you watched the Toronto HD broadcast rather than the SD broadcast, they actually ran the real credits - on the lower 1/3 of the screen rather than on the right-hand side.
I haven’t watched enough CBC HD to know if that is normal or not.

Loved it! Great cheesy stuff (The Doctor wrestling with the arm while Rose is talking in the other room, that was HILARIOUS) THANK YOU BBC and and THANK YOU CBC for bring it here.

I was very pleased. I can’t think of a better premeir episode of any doctor. I love the look of the new TARDIS interior. Eccelston was great (too bad he’s leaving) as was Piper. It was paced well and finally had good production values. My only gripes were the burp (but I think they did that as a precaution to make it seem less scary to wee ones watching. The first appearance of the autons gave kids nightmares back in the 70s as I;m sure you all know) and the way the Doc invited Piper to come along. With all the danger involved seems a little irresponsible. Oh well. I guess they can’t all be stowaways.
Can’t wait for next week!

Please, please, please is there anybody in the Greater Vancouver region who happened to tape the episode last night? It was my partner’s birthday last night so I had to go out to dinner and stupidly I forgot all about the first episode being on and hence did not set my video recorder, bugger! It seems CBC will not be re-broadcasting it so now I need to find a way to watch it before the 2nd episode is aired. If you have this on tape and are in the Vancouver region and wouldn’t mind making a copy to give to a fellow Who fan please let me know!

Shaun: I’m not in Vancouver area (London, ON), but I taped the show and could mail it to you if you haven’t found a copy yet.
Shame about Christopher Eccelson leaving. I thought he was great.
Last night was my first ever Dr. Who experience. I am so hooked I can’t believe it.
Does anyone know when these “Planet Of The Doctor” spots are airing? I can’t see anything about dates/times on the CBC website. Since I’m new to the world of Who I am desperate to watch them.

Dr. Who Ep #1: “Rose” Highlight Review by: uh, me:
==================================================
[a review based on commenting on the episode’s
highlights - in chronological order - because I’m
insane - OK!]
(WARNING! SPOILERS BELOW)
Rose standing about looking tart-smart:
MmmmMMmMMmmMMmMMmm British Tarts aren’t just for
breakfast anymore, lads.
Auton Mannequins menacing Rose: Boo, you leave my
Rose alone!
Dr. Who managing to both look smart, smarmy and
oblivious: Kudos, not at all easy to pull off.
(as not many people can pull off 3 “boths” - Ed)
He’s (Christopher Eccleston -Ed) purportedly leaving at the end of this season.
Contract re-negotiation ploy or “actor doesn’t want to be typecast” motive? you decide.
Advice (mine) (still): Don’t take career advice from Tasha Yar!
Rose _running_ about looking tart-smart: MmmmMmmmmMmmmmMmmm.
Dr. Who nuking Henrik’s department store: Looked like footage from Well’s War of the Worlds’ lamp-post aliens blowing stuff up. Still cool.
Rose running about looking tart-smart: Did we mention “MmmmMmmmMmmmmMmmmmMmmm”.
Mannequin arm re-animated: Desperately trying to avoid Inserting lewd comment about Bride-of-Chucky contacting The Nestine Consciousness for anatomically-problematic Chucky assistance.
Rose visiting internet geek Clive: MmmmmMmmmmMmmmmMmmm Again, Again, Again.
Garbage can eats Rose’s BF Mickey: Sorry mate, that’s wot you get for stealing our Rose.
Rose oblivious to Mickey doppleganger’s plastic hair: OK, so our Rose won’t win any “terribly observant” awards, but she has other attributes.
.
The Nestene Consciousness’ plastic-plan to-take-over-the-world-using-the-London-Eye-Wheel-as-a-transmitter-to-automate-the-er-Autons: Ah, Megalomaniacal world-dominating aliens with insane scientific contraptions. I’m home.
Zombie Mannequins Human-Shopping-Spree: I loved Dawn of the Dead. Werks here too. Could ‘ave stood to be more disturbing.
Rose & The Doctor’s anti-plastic saves the day: YAY!
*cough* sorry, relapse.
Yes, we all saw this coming a horizon or two off, but let us face it, this scene wasn’t about the anti-Plastic.
(it isn’t? - Ed)
No. ‘ere we get to see Rose announce with dramatic ..“this-is-not-my-real-face, I-am-REALLY ” flair…that she is..in fact..a dexterous gymnast!
(and therefore, is, by definition, quite possibly, the perfect British tart - Ed)
[pause]
Oh YEAH. Close the door, mang.
Overall-Rating: 8.5 Tentacles up. Quite a bit of fun, a very enjoyable British-comic-sensibilitied come classic Sci-Fi, motif’ed romp.
First episode to put Rose in a plaid skirt, I shall name a future child after.
(not necessarily one of mine, you understand, but someone’s)
