More fun with logos
Broadcast magazine has a good news item on the new logo, including information on the designers, Red Bee Media - who have a pretty impressive track record of TV work.
Not that you would read that on the Doctor Who News Page. They haven’t posted anything since yesterday morning. They haven’t even POSTED AN IMAGE OF THE LOGO YET. Instead, they posted the geofenced video from the BBC website (which any reader outside the UK, including most of the News Page’s editors, can’t read). What’s mind-boggling is they could have easily posted the image or even the YouTube version of it (which isn’t even breaching copyright—the BBC posted it to YouTube themselves). 24 hours on there’s still nothing…
So we’ll add some more content that should be up on the News Page. According to SFX, the BBC have another ‘widescreen’ treatment of the logo
While no one is saying, this might be how the title appears on screen or on the side of DVD spines! I must say I prefer it to the 60s-ish stacked version, but that’s personal preference.

Yes this “Stretched” version looks a little bit better. Still not totally liking the “DW” TARDIS in the middle althoughit will look good on the spine of a book or DVD or on the upper right hand corner of the Doctor Who magazine. (Which I suspect will likely be seen starting with the January issue)

I finally sent an e-mail to the BBC website to complain about the fact that we can’t enjoy the videos on their website. I just thought I would share with you their reply.

Question: I am sick of the videos on this site always “not available in my area”. Do us non-british not matter?!!!I would have very much loved to see the evolution of the Doctor Who Logo but alas, as with every other video, I can not!It pretty much tells me that if one doesn’t live in the UK, one may as well not visit the official Doctor Who website.

Hi Stephen,
Thank you for contacting the BBC. Unfortunately, we are restricted to limiting video content to the UK due to rights and licensing issues which prevent us from making video available overseas for legal reasons. We understand that this can be very frustrating for international fans of Doctor Who but unfortunately there is very little we can do. As for the new logo footage, we have made this available to BBC channels across the world as well as YouTube so please check your local/national BBC website for more information. Kind Regards, The Doctor Who Web Team

I am no sure why they started their reply with “Hi Stephen” but at least I got a reply.

I’ve come to accept (if not agree with) the BBC website policy. It’s the Doctor Who news page action that is completely mystifying to me. It’s needlessly annoying, and even if they were concerned about copyright of the video, putting what is effectively “dead space” for a majority of the planet at the head of your website is craziness (or apathy).

But it’s still not available to Canadian viewers as it isn’t on the BBC Canada website, nor are the BBC YouTube channel videos viewable from Canada.
Hmph!

Personally I’ve stopped even bothering to visit the BBC website. If they just want to play with people from their own backyard, whatever. Usually any geolocked (or geofenced) video gets posted to YouTube or elsewhere within a few hours (and, to throw the BBC’s words back at them, there’s little they can do about it). They just come off looking silly and out of touch with reality. Put the blame on the lawyers if you must, but the end result is the same.
I have to agree the News Page dropped the ball on this bigtime. They could have and should have just posted a screen cap rather than causing some of us to have to go looking far and wide for the new logo. And it’s nearly 10 days later and I only just found out about the horizontal version (they haven’t even bothered to report it).
I’m hoping it’s just a glitch, since they were pretty fast in reporting the death of Barry Letts.
