The Eleventh Doctor (and Amy Pond) Revealed

image

The mothership (aka the BBC Doctor Who site) has released the first photo of Matt Smith’s Doctor in costume. They also have stories on the start of filming of series five and the new companion played by Karen Gillan whose name has been revealed to be Amy Pond.

The Daily Mail goes one step further by giving us an article complete photos of the Doctor and Amy and the slightly tweaked version of the TARDIS (one producer really enjoyed the Peter Cushing movies as a child, clearly…)

It’s amazing how much the new producers have not revealed—we didn’t know the new companion’s name for months after the character was cast, and further back they managed to keep Matt Smith and Karen Gillan’s casting a total surprise. We still don’t know what writers and directors are working on the new series (odd since the start of filming press releases usually have a list of them). But that’s part of the fun this time, clearly.

Matt Smith’s costume is surprisingly restrained given how outrageous the actor seems to dress in real life. It’s keeping alive the ‘nerd chic’ of David Tennant’s costume. The bowtie is a daring choice but we think if anyone can pull it off, it’s Matt Smith.

I’m still in denial-land the David’s leaving.  However, I don’t like the new TARDIS design.  It looks really garish and retro (not in a good way).  Matt’s costume surprised me a lot, I’m not sure what sort of personality his Doctor will have, but I thought the black outfit he wore for the earlier promos suited him much more.

On the other hand, Karen’s costume looks nice (keeping the Converse theme alive on the show, I see).  Steven Moffat seems to have a thing for odd character names.

The Tardis looks like the plastic one on my shelf.  Hopefully it won’t come off that way on screen.  Mind you I’m more worried about what it might look like inside!

As far as the outfit, I can live with it.  Not a bow-tie fan personally but it seems to ‘fit’.

Although I admit it’s exciting, these pictures and articles are serving to put me into yet another phase of mourning for 10, now having seen another another face on ‘my’ Doctor for real.  Knowing there’s going to be another actor in the part and seeing who it is, is one thing…having to see him in character and with the Tardis is something else entirely.
And Tennant’s not even technically gone yet!

I shall adjust.  I shall adjust.  I shall adjust.

Re: The Bow Tie. I wonder of its a clip on.

The first thoughts that came to mind re: the outfit were Troughton mixed with Andrew Kearley’s Bullseye Books Doctor from the mid ‘90s! (That last pic on the Daily Mail site is totally a Troughton pose.)

The TARDIS looks pretty much the same what are people complaining about?

Has someone noticed that the TARDIS front door behind Karen Gillian in the second pic has a St John Ambulance badge (seen in the early First Doctor serials)? Looks like Mr. Moffat is in for some serious tweaking here.

A bit ironic that from the candid photo of them that I posted in the entry previous to this one, it is Karen Gillan’s outfit which turned out to be closer to what she will be wearing on screen (at least, in this first episode that is being filmed), instead of Matt Smith’s (ie. no coat and scarf for the 11th Doctor but a short skirt for Amy).

yeah, what’s the diff between the old tardis & new?  i don’t see a diff!

I like the changes to the TARDIS. Makes it look more like the Hartnell era, which I think is the point. I wonder if this can be seen as confirmation that they’re going to redesign the control room (as long as they stay away from the leopard skin desktop theme, of course!). I’ve got no problem at all with the outfit. Just remember what Colin Baker got saddled with and ANYTHING is good after that. As a point of trivia, I’m hearing that Karen is 5’ 11, which could make her the tallest female companion ever (someone else needs to check that—Louise Jameson is the only one who might be close to 5 ‘11).

Incidentally, be very aware that some of the photos circulating from the set contain a MAJOR character spoiler in the shape of a guest star. I punched the air when I saw it, personally, but anyone wanting to avoid the spoiler should perhaps just make do with the photo reproduced here.

Yeah I saw that ‘spoiler’ photo…and of course I’m not sure how I’ll manage to wait a year or more to find out how ‘that person’ fits into the storyline with new Doc…. especially considering the previous (for us) encounter!

One additional comment (with regards to the spoiler photos). Considering DW shoots episodes out of order and in blocks, we don’t know if these photos are from the first episode of the season or even the finale (or mid-season finale if the rumors of a split season are correct). I personally don’t think the “special guest star” will appear in the first episode. They’ll be too busy establishing Matt Smith, and presumably introducing Amy, to be sidetrack with this other person. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out.

i have faith in everything apart from that outfit, no idea why its bugging me so much but it looks frankly terrible.
